Explore Barcelona’s Gothic churches and plazas in this guided walking tour
The tour will begin at 5:00 p.m. with a visit to the Basilica of Santa María del Mar, where we will explore the interior of the church. We will learn about the history of the builders, merchants, and sailors who constructed this icon of Catalan Gothic architecture, as well as its spiritual and social significance in medieval Barcelona.
Next, we will head to the Basilica of La Mercè, dedicated to the city’s patron saint. Standing before its façade, we will learn about the origins of the Mercedarian Order, the devotion to Our Lady of La Mercè, and her role in Barcelona’s religious history.
We’ll continue our tour through the Gothic Quarter until we reach the Basilica of Santa María del Pi, one of the finest examples of Catalan Gothic architecture. As we admire its façade and its famous rose window, we’ll discuss medieval parish life, the guilds, and the evolution of the city’s historic center.
Next, we’ll head into Plaça de Sant Felip Neri, one of the most iconic spots in the Old Town. Standing before the façade of the Church of Sant Felip Neri, we’ll recall the history of the bombings it endured during the Civil War, the scars of which are still visible on its walls.
We’ll conclude the tour in front of Barcelona Cathedral, where, as we admire its Gothic façade, we’ll learn about the history of Saint Eulalia, the city’s patron saint, and the cathedral’s importance as Barcelona’s spiritual, political, and artistic center over the centuries.
